Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Tennis elbow affects the tendons that connect the forearm muscles to the outside of the elbow. Repeated gripping, lifting, or wrist movements can contribute, even if you do not play tennis.

Symptoms

  • Pain or burning on the outside of the elbow, sometimes extending into the forearm
  • Discomfort when gripping an object or turning a handle
  • Reduced grip strength
  • Tenderness and, sometimes, pain at night

Treatment

Many people improve with nonsurgical care. Dr. Davies may recommend modifying painful activities, a brace, physical or occupational therapy, and medication when appropriate. Recovery can take several months.

If symptoms persist, additional treatments such as PRP or shockwave therapy may be discussed after reviewing the evidence, risks, and alternatives. Corticosteroid injections are not routinely recommended for tennis elbow because lasting benefit is limited; any use requires an individualized discussion.
