Fractures of the Elbow

A fracture is a break in a bone. At the elbow, a fall or direct impact can injure the lower end of the upper-arm bone or the upper ends of the forearm bones. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty bending, straightening, or rotating the arm.

Evaluation and treatment

Dr. Davies evaluates the injury with an examination and imaging when needed. Treatment depends on the fracture’s location, alignment, and stability. It may include a sling, splint, or cast followed by guided movement and rehabilitation. Some fractures require surgery; your evaluation will determine the appropriate treatment or referral.

Seek prompt medical care after a suspected fracture. An open wound over the injury, a visibly deformed elbow, or a cold, pale, or numb hand requires urgent assessment.
